So as you
may know, Lauryn Hill has gotten herself into a slight pickle regarding some
unpaid taxes, and is currently undergoing a tax evasion case.
Owing a
measly sum of $968,000 in unpaid taxes between 2005 and 2007, it’s now been
revealed that Ms Hill has in fact signed a $1 million deal with Sony to create
five all new songs for the label, and is planning to take out a $650,000 loan.
This would allow her to pay off the debt and avoid three years in prison, which
just doesn’t seem to be a place Lauryn should be.
It’s not
clear by when exactly she has to make these songs by, and according to
Billboard, she’s yet to even start writing anything despite her signing the
deal earlier this year and you know, the freaking $968,000 she has to pay looming
over her head. Many are hoping (including Sony most likely) that she’ll take
the opportunity to make a full fledged album and not just five songs,
especially as this would net her more money in the long run.
I’m not sure
how I feel about this myself – don’t get me wrong, the idea of The Miseducation
of Lauryn Hill 2 is a truly beautiful one, but an album she’s forced to make so
she won’t go to jail? Not sure about that. There are literally hundreds of
albums out today that we can safely say were made purely for the money, and
quality of such albums are mediocre. Though the fact that she appears to be so
non-chalant about it puts me at ease a bit, as it looks like she might be
waiting until she feels like she wants to make music. In any case with music
having changed so, so much since 1998, I’d be interested to see how a new
Lauryn Hill album (or EP) would sound. But until then, stay tuned.
